DRY EYE

Dry Eye Syndrome refers to the condition of lack of tears to lubricate and provide sufficient moisture to the eye. Chronic dry eye occurs when eyes do not produce the right quantity or quality of tears. The main functions of tears are to lubricate the eyes and protect them from bacteria and enviromental irritants such as dust. This requires both the right amoun of tears and a balance of the many components that make up the tears.
In one estimate millions of people suffer from severe, moderate or episodic Dry Eye Syndrome worldwide.
Dry Eye can be a progressive disease, and if left untreated, chronic dry eye can lead to more serious problems, including impaired vision and an increased risk of eye infections.

SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYE SYNDROME

  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Burning
  • Watery eyes
  • Unclear Vision

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

Pollution : Increasing pollution around us leads to accumulation of dirt in the eyes which over time can cause itching and soreness.
Lifestyle : Disturbed lifestyle involving stress, irregular sleep, high intake of junk food and poor eating habits.
Allergies : Seasonal allergies are also a reason for eye diseases such as allergic conjunctivitis.
Chemicals : Colour additives and chemicals used in food products. Excessive use of cosmetics in and around eye area.
Technology : Too much exposure to gadgets and constant working on computer can cause dry eye syndrome or watery eyes. CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) also know as Digital Eye Strain.

Population suffering from dry eye syndrome

Though a large percentage of population suffer from chronic dry eye, it is more common among certain groups of people. They include:

  • Menopausal women
  • Older people, because tear production decreases with age
  • People who live at high altitudes or in sunny, dry, windy environments because of increased tear evaporation
  • People with autoimmune disorders (e.g., Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis)
  • Computer users because they blink less when concentrating on the monitor
  • Contact lens wearers because of increased tear evaporation

Many individuals experience eye discomfort and vision problems when viewing digital screens for extended periods. The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of digital screen use.

The most common symptoms associated with Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) or Digital Eye Strain are

  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain

These symptoms may be caused by:

  • Poor lighting
  • Glare on a digital screen
  • Improper viewing distances
  • Poor seating posture
  • Uncorrected vision problems
  • A combination of these factors
